The latest trend: e-Business for services

Currently, every second company uses its e-procurement platform for less than a quarter of its...

Karlsruhe: July 20th, 2010 - The fact that e-business for services is a hot topic, is not least shown by the rather sobering survey of utilization of current e-procurement platforms. They realize the potential savings and value-added effects of e-shopping insufficient until now. The utilization of current e-platforms, which are now used almost exclusively for the purchase of goods (C-goods), can be significantly improved by the addition of procurement for services. POET AG, a provider of eBusiness solutions, got this assessment based on customer votes and feedback of the market. It is also supported by a recent study by the BME. The purchase via internet puts their essential users in a position where significant savings in the procurement processes for services in case of time, effort and costs are possible.

POET’s argumentation is based i.a. on the results of the "mood barometer Electronic Procurement 2010" published by the BME (Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik e.V., an association for Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics). The study shows that 63 percent of companies using e-procurement for more than three years transact less than 50 percent of their catalog compatible materials through electronic catalogs. Even more disappointing is the balance of the lower usage segment. Accordingly, currently every second company uses the e-procurement platform not even 25 percent.

Service as e-procurement driver
Already today there is a greater need for services than for goods. At the same time, the importance of services for the economy grows. With this background, the issue of „service purchasing“ is predestined not only to raise the utilization and therefore the return on investment of today's procurement platforms, as Dr. Jakob Karszt, CEO of POET AG, said. It’s also possible to eliminate inefficiencies of the existing procurement practice caused by e.g. long lead times, high resource and coordination requirements at essential users and suppliers, media breaks, duplications and delayed payment.

So far the implementation and launch of a procurement solution for services was barred by the missing standardization. In addition, there was a lack of practical insights, recommendations and quantified benefits.

Services procurement project: eBusInstand
With the objective to change this, two years ago the project eBusInstand started under the direction of the FZI Karlsruhe, research center of computer science. The participating development partners developed accompanied by the standardization partner eCl@ss until 2010 verified and applicable processes and results based on two software solutions. These is for one thing the Internet platform DLA-Online developed by BASF IT Services, Ludwigshafen, which supports the overall process of settlement of external services including functions for tendering, contracting, handling and accounting of the service performed by the service provider. For another thing it is the Interactive Shopping Cart developed by POET which enables i.a. the search and composing of shopping carts as well as a flexible interactive and communication-based configuration and transaction process for the service purchasing.

The project results achieved are applicable beyond the field of maintenance to many applications of the services procurement. „The project has a special icebreaker function with initial spark for other areas“ says POET Head of eProcurement Gregor Goebel. For a quick market acceptance the needs and requirements of suppliers, very often SME companies with less pronounced "e-skills“, were considered in the developed technologies. The goal of all eBusInstand partners is to get many large enterprises in business and industry and a large number of their suppliers on board of the electronic procurement of services.
